Shower Tile Installation in Scottsdale, Arizona
Custom shower tile covering walls, floors, niches, benches and curbs. Waterproofing and substrate preparation are completed before any tile is installed — tile and grout alone are not a waterproofing system.
Waterproofing Is Not Optional in a Tile Shower
Tile and grout alone are not a waterproofing system. Water moves through grout joints and can reach the substrate behind the tile. A properly constructed shower requires a waterproofing membrane applied to the substrate before tile installation begins. The specific product and method depend on the substrate type, project conditions and manufacturer requirements. Omitting or improperly installing waterproofing is a leading cause of shower failures and moisture damage.
Shower Tile — What Is Involved
A tiled shower is one of the more complex tile installations in a home. The combination of continuous water exposure, multiple planes, slopes, drains, niches and curbs requires careful planning and execution at each stage.
Substrate preparation begins with evaluating the existing conditions. In a remodel, the existing tile and substrate are typically removed to inspect the framing and allow for proper waterproofing installation. In new construction, cement board or an equivalent substrate is installed before waterproofing begins.
Waterproofing membrane is applied to the substrate and allowed to cure before tile installation begins. Corners, seams and penetrations — including the drain connection — receive specific treatment to ensure a continuous waterproof barrier.
Tile layout is planned before installation to minimize small cuts at visible edges, maintain consistent joint spacing and account for the slope toward the drain. Shower floor tile requires a continuous slope — typically 1/4 inch per foot — toward the drain.
Shower Walls
Large-format tile, subway tile, natural stone, mosaic accents. Layout planned to minimize cuts at eye level and doorways.
Shower Floors
Mosaic tile, small-format porcelain or stone. Sloped toward drain with consistent grout joints and appropriate slip resistance.
Niches
Recessed shelf built into wall. All surfaces waterproofed. Tile selection coordinated with wall tile.
Benches
Built-in seating tiled with matching or complementary material. Surface sloped to drain. Substrate and waterproofing required.
Curbs & Thresholds
Transition between shower floor and bathroom floor. Tile selection and height coordinated with adjacent flooring.
Drains
Traditional center drains and linear drains both require specific installation methods and slope planning.
Tile Options for Showers
Shower tile selection balances aesthetics, performance and maintenance requirements. Porcelain is the most widely used material due to its low water absorption and durability. Natural stone, glass and specialty materials are also used with appropriate installation methods.
Porcelain
Advantages: Low absorption, durable, wide format range, low maintenance
Consideration: Large-format requires flatter substrate; back-buttering required
Marble
Advantages: Luxury appearance, natural variation, timeless aesthetic
Consideration: Requires non-staining setting materials, sealing, specific maintenance
Travertine
Advantages: Natural stone warmth, classic appearance, suitable for Scottsdale aesthetics
Consideration: Filled or unfilled options; sealing required; softer than porcelain
Mosaic Tile
Advantages: Flexible for slopes and curves, texture for slip resistance, accent options
Consideration: More grout joints require more maintenance; sheet alignment important
Glass Tile
Advantages: Reflective, contemporary, accent walls and niches
Consideration: Requires specific setting materials; more visible if lippage occurs
Large-Format Porcelain
Advantages: Minimal grout joints, modern aesthetic, easy to clean
Consideration: Requires very flat substrate; slope planning on shower floors more complex
